Rules & Information for the Tournament
1. Format
The Championship will be played in two (or more) sections
- Section A: The eight top rated teams will play in the A section in a 7-round ‘Round-Robin’. (Only one team per union will be allowed to play in this section.
- Section B: The B section will consist of the rest of the teams that did not qualify for the A section, and will play in a 7-round SWISS tournament.
2. Who may enter
- Provincial regions recognized by Chessa. There are 21 unions and each union may enter more than one team, i.e. a 1st team, 2nd team, Ladies team, Braille team, senior team etc.
3. Team composition
- Teams will consist of 5 players, i.e. 4 playing players (4 boards) and 1 reserve.
- Teams are not obliged to include a reserve player.
- Players must play in the board order as indicated on the entry form. If it is found that a team has “shuffled” their board order, the team involved will lose that match and score zero (“0”) points.
- The reserve player (if used) may only play on the bottom board (4th board). All other affected players will shift up one board.
- Reserve players may only play for one team. E.g. a player cannot be reserve for the A-team and be board 1 for the B-team.
- Average team ratings will be calculated by averaging the ratings of a team’s first 4 boards (excluding the reserve player).
- In order to qualify for a board prize, a player must play at least 4 games.
4. Determining the Winners
- The team scoring the most number of game points (aggregate of the scores on the four boards) after seven rounds is the winner.
5. Tiebreak
5.1 In the event of a tie for any position (including 1st position), the tie between teams with the same scores will be broken as follows (in order):
- Match points
- Direct encounter (the results between the tying teams)
- Sonneborn-Berger
5.2 Board prizes
The player with the highest percentage score on a specific board wins the board prize. A tie between players (that have played at least 4 games on a specific board) and scoring similar percentages will be broken as follows (in order)
- Number of games played on that board
- Direct encounter (if applicable)
- Toss of a coin
6. Time control
90/90 (90 minutes per player to complete the game).
7. Registration

8. Date & Venue
- Date: Thursday, 24 September 2009 – Sunday, 27 September 2009
- Venue: Afrikaans High School for Boys (Afrikaans Hoër Seuns skool), 1 Lynwood Road, Pretoria (See MAP for directions)
9. Transport
Teams / players are responsible for their own transport arrangements.
10. Accommodation
- Accommodation will be available at the venue in the school hostel at R400 per person, which includes three nights sleep over, breakfast, Saturday evening braai, and Sunday morning refreshments.
- Players to provide own bedding. Bedding will be available at R50 per person.
- Teams / players not staying in the hostel are responsible for their own accommodation arrangements.
11. Closing date for entries
Booking of accommodation: the accommodation booking form must be completed and submitted before 20 August 2009 (Extended to 6 September). A booking confirmation form will be sent to the entrants. No beds are reserved without the booking reservation form being completed and e-mailed or faxed. All payments must be received before 31 August 2009.(Extended to 6 September)
Team entries: the team entry form must be submitted before 31 August 2009 (Extended to 13 September), and the team entry fee must be paid before 31 August 2009. (Extended to 6 September)
LATE ENTRIES (AFTER 6 SEPTEMBER)
TEAM ENTRY: R400 PER TEAM
HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION: R500 PER PERSON
No refunds of any moneys paid after 6 September 2009.
12. Arbiters
The Arbiters and appeals committee shall be announced before the start of the tournament.
- Appeals: A player may appeal against the decision of an arbiter, except for rulings in terms of Art 10.2 of the Laws. The player shall appeal in writing only and submit the appeal within 30 minutes after the game in question had been completed or 30 minutes after the arbiter’s decision that ended the game. Each appeal shall be accompanied by a R100 fee which will be returned to the player if the appeal is successful.
13. General rules
- Because this will be a CHESSA rated event, ALL participants MUST be registered with CHESSA for 2009. Proof of registration may be requested during registration.
- Entry fees and accommodation fees must be paid before the deadline.
- FIDE Laws of Chess (latest edition), subject to these rules, to apply.
- Board prizes. A player will only qualify for the board prize as indicated on the team’s entry form. E.g. If a player is registered to play board 3, and he/she plays more games on a different board (e.g. board 2), then he/she will only qualify for the board 3 prize
- Teams must supply a minimum of two (2) clocks, preferably each team must supply four (4) clocks. All clocks must be in good working order.
- Other rules for the event shall be announced at the start of a round and or published on the notice board at the playing venue. Ignorance of the Laws of Chess or failure to read notices at the playing venue will not be considered a valid excuse for the infringement of the Laws or the organizers arrangements.
